Cardboard Loom Weaving Workshop (Ages 5–12)
Discover the beauty in patterns, textures, and everyday materials in this fun and creative weaving workshop for children.
Description:
Discover the beauty in patterns, textures, and everyday materials in this fun and creative weaving workshop for children.
Inspired by our BENCHES exhibition – where repetition, variation, and detail transform ordinary benches into something extraordinary – this session invites young makers to explore those same ideas through colourful textile art.
Using simple cardboard looms, children will create their own woven pieces filled with bold stripes and unique patterns, taking inspiration from the lines, shapes, and rhythms found in the exhibition’s photographs. Just like no two benches are the same, every weaving will be completely individual.
In keeping with the exhibition’s theme of finding beauty in the overlooked, children will work with a mix of materials such as leftover wool, fabric strips, and ribbons - turning what might have been discarded into something vibrant and meaningful. It’s a wonderful way to encourage creativity while showing how everyday objects can be reimagined.
Guided by our friendly facilitators, children will learn basic weaving techniques while developing fine motor skills, focus, and confidence through hands-on making. The repetitive, rhythmic nature of weaving can also be calming and rewarding, offering a mindful creative experience.
The BENCHES exhibition is on display in our main space throughout the whole month of April, making it a perfect addition to your visit. We encourage families to explore the exhibition before or after the workshop so children can see how patterns and repetition appear in both art and the world around them.
Perfect for ages 5–12, no experience is needed – all materials, including cardboard looms and weaving supplies, are provided.
Parents and carers are welcome to accompany children in the workshop, or relax nearby on our comfy sofas with coffee, cake, and snacks from the café.
