Restoring the past. Shaping the future.

Real Ideas is a social enterprise using creativity, innovation and community to power change — across the South West and beyond.

Reviving history with purpose.

At Real Ideas, we believe heritage buildings are more than relics—they're opportunities. We bring historic spaces back to life with care, creativity, and ambition, reimagining them as places for community, innovation, and possibility. From the striking transformation of Devonport’s Market Hall to the revival of Liskeard Library, our restoration work blends craftsmanship with contemporary design, making room for the people and ideas of today—while honouring the stories of yesterday.

Market Hall, Plymouth

Located in the heart of Devonport, Market Hall is a beautifully restored mid-19th century building with a rich and varied history. Originally designed by James Piers St Aubyn and opened in 1852, it served as a bustling marketplace and a vital hub for the local community.

Though damaged during World War II and left in disrepair for many years, the building was saved from demolition thanks to a major restoration project led by Real Ideas in 2013. Today, Market Hall is a vibrant centre for innovation, creativity, and community.

It is home to the UK’s first immersive dome of its kind—an awe-inspiring 15-metre space featuring 360° visuals and a 19.1 surround sound system—offering unforgettable experiences for all ages. The building also houses bright co-working spaces, meeting rooms, and event venues, all available through flexible membership options.

With its unique blend of heritage, cutting-edge technology, and inclusive programming, Market Hall is a must-visit destination for creatives, learners, and curious minds alike.

Guildhall & The Column, Plymouth

Located in the heart of historic Devonport, the Guildhall and neighbouring Column are striking Regency landmarks designed by architect John Foulston in the early 1820s. Carefully restored by Real Ideas and reopened to the public in 2010, Devonport Guildhall now serves as a vibrant space for events, co-working, and community activity.

The Column, reopened in 2013, offers panoramic views across Plymouth and beyond from its 124ft-high viewing platform, making it a unique destination for visitors and locals alike.

In 2025, the Guildhall will become a central part of the Devonport Creative Quarter, providing studios for resident artists, a dedicated print studio, and flexible exhibition space. This next chapter will further establish the Guildhall as a hub for creativity, collaboration, and cultural engagement.

Liskeard Library: A Historic Landmark Reimagined

Built in 1896 by Victorian philanthropist John Passmore Edwards, Liskeard Library has long stood as a symbol of accessible learning. Now, following a major renovation led by Real Ideas in partnership with Cornwall Council, the building reopened on September 30th, 2023—restored and reimagined for modern community use.

The ground floor offers thousands of books and digital access to the wider catalogue, alongside a new café, courtyard, and rooftop terrace—creating welcoming spaces to read, relax, and connect. Upstairs, three bright rooms are available for hire, supporting events, meetings, and Real Pathways sessions.

This transformation was made possible through funding from Cornwall Council, the Shared Prosperity Fund, the Architectural Heritage Fund, and G7. Together, Real Ideas and Cornwall Council continue to deliver a vital library service for Liskeard—preserving its heritage while shaping a more inclusive future.
