Sue Lewry is a printmaker, educator and early-career researcher working across screen printing, design and social making. Central to her practice is Colossal, her mobile print studio, which takes printmaking out of the traditional workshop and into public spaces.

For Creative Intersections Day, Sue will bring Colossal into the space for a live screen-printing experiment. Building on Ink Factory, her 2025 live printing performance, she will explore porosity through ink, paper and process. Expect something physical, analogue and slightly disruptive, with room for the unexpected.

Kayla and Stuart are artists and film-makers based in Plymouth. A key strand of our collaborative practice centres on landscape, place and memory, with a focus on rivers, estuaries and coastal zones. Their short films evolve through the experimental techniques and ‘direct animation’ techniques they’ve developed through working with upcycled expired and discarded 16mm and 35mm ‘analogue’ film (photochemical film or its cellulose acetate substrate). They digitally sculpt the sound design from field recordings made at the locations close to the location which is the focus of that film.

Their talk includes a showcase of short films that demonstrate their experimental techniques working with upcycled 16mm and 35mm film material, which is then scanned for screening and exhibition. They’ll also show direct animation artwork on display lightboxes, which explore the space where analogue and digital practices meet.

Laura Clarke is a Master Printer, Instructor and Traditional Print Specialist at the Centre for Print Research (CFPR), where she joined in 2019 as Senior Research Technician in Print Technologies.

‘Where the Hand Meets the Machine: Craft, Code and Contemporary Printmaking’

This talk discusses the collaboration between artist R James Healy and myself in my role as Master Printer at the Centre for Print Research, UWE Bristol. It explores how robotics, algorithms and traditional screen printing techniques were combined to bridge the gap between the handmade and the digital.

Alex Russell is a contemporary artist, working with hand-made images and computer programming to build non-AI generative systems that create one-off digital prints. His processes translate traditional methods of composition (such as armatures or pattern repeats) into networks of algorithms that influence each other’s relative behaviour.

These employ complex systems (such as cellular automata or emergence) to determine the location and characteristics of hundreds of drawings, paintings and collages within a final piece.

Their collaborative interdisciplinary practice explores time, material, place and memory through print, sculpture, moving image, sound and ephemeral matter. They investigate how materials embody lived experience, carry historical narratives and shape our relationship with the environment.

Heather’s practice explores place memory, social inequalities and histories of class, labour and community. Lizzie’s work engages with the sensory and spatial qualities of materials, exploring their transformation and affective potential.

Grounded in a phenomenological approach, their work invites viewers to encounter materials through their senses, memories and bodies. They aim to create evolving spaces that reflect on the persistence of history, the changing nature of place and our relationship with materiality and the world around us.
