Reconnecting with the World: HS's Skills Future Journey

HS’s case study explores their courageous journey from isolation to rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with daily life, and re‑entering learning through steady, person‑centred support.

This case study celebrates HS’s determined and courageous journey from long term isolation to reconnecting with everyday life, learning, and future opportunities.

Introduction

Skills Future is for young people in Cornwall who want to build confidence, develop skills, and plan for their next steps. Led by Cornwall Council, the programme offers flexible, person-centred support tailored to each individual’s needs and pace.

HS was referred through their EHCP and joined the project in October 2025. They had no qualifications or work experience at the time, and after a long period of social isolation and heightened anxiety, even small everyday interactions felt overwhelming.

Despite these barriers, HS joined the programme with a clear goal: to rebuild confidence, reconnect with society, and take meaningful steps toward a healthier, more independent life.

Our Role

Support centred on giving HS a safe, steady space to explore their fears, understand their anxiety, and build trust in themselves again. Over time, HS and Dan, their co-ordinator, developed a strong, honest rapport — one built on shared experiences, openness, and mutual respect.

A significant part of the work involved unpacking the internal stories HS’s anxiety had been holding onto. Together, they explored how fears can shape unhelpful narratives, and how challenging those narratives can open the door to confidence and new possibilities.

This reflective work took place gradually, at a pace HS controlled. Session by session, they built trust— both in the support offered and, more importantly, in their own ability to question old patterns and take brave steps forward.

What We Delivered

Building Confidence and Life Skills

HS began with online sessions, which offered a gentle re-entry into communication after an extended period of isolation. These sessions became a place to:

  • Explore anxiety triggers with clarity
  • Understand how fear-based stories fuel avoidance
  • Introduce simple, practical strategies for self-management
  • Practise communication in a space that felt safe and non‑judgmental

Progress was steady and meaningful. Each small breakthrough — speaking more openly, appearing on camera, challenging a fear — represented a leap forward.

Alongside emotional strategies, HS also rebuilt daily structures, including healthier routines around sleep, nutrition, organisation, and activity, all of which contributed to improved wellbeing.

Re‑engaging with the World

One of HS’s most powerful achievements has been stepping back into everyday environments after months spent indoors. Through consistent encouragement and a growing belief in their own capacity, HS:

  • Began leaving the house weekly
  • Reconnected with places they had avoided
  • Tried new social interactions at a manageable pace
  • Started planning for more time outside and around others

These actions required real courage. Each time HS challenged an unhelpful narrative, their confidence grew, allowing them to take steps that once felt unimaginable.

Learning and Future Planning

Alongside confidence-building, HS re-entered education through Functional Skills, working toward Level 2 English and Maths. Caitlyn, from Argyle Community Trust, provided helpful academic structure, while wider sessions focused on career ideas, long-term goals, and developing a positive view of the future.

This combination of emotional growth and practical learning has begun to open up new opportunities for HS.

Impact

HS’s progress has been extraordinary. Rooted firmly in their own bravery and commitment to change and through consistent effort and reflection, HS has

  • Re-entered education and regained learning confidence
  • Built the strength to leave the house regularly
  • Reconnected with the world after over a year of isolation
  • Developed emotional resilience and personal coping tools
  • Improved mental health and daily wellbeing
  • Started exploring future training and personal goals

HS was previously NEET, but is now actively engaged, hopeful, and building momentum for the next stage of their journey. Their achievements have exceeded their original goals in meaningful, life-shaping ways.

Testimonials

HS:
“When I first began, I hadn't gone outside for months or spoken to anyone outside my immediate family in over a year. After just a couple of meetings, I was able to be fully on camera and communicate confidently. Now I go outside at least once a week, sometimes more, with no anxiety attacks, and I'm finally looking forward to socialising with the world.”

Parent:
“Dan at Real Ideas has been an absolute star. He has progressed HS more in the last few months than we’ve seen over the previous four years, during which time we’ve had different professionals come and go. They have always had high expectations but short timescales, and Dan has come at things from a different angle that has genuinely worked and we’ve seen real results.

He has connected with HS brilliantly, sharing similar interests, which I think has helped enormously. They’ve had all sorts of conversations, many of which I’m not privy to and that’s actually a good thing. It has given HS a sense of independence. They haven’t missed a session, and they’ve not shown any distress or reluctance about taking part in any of it.

For Dan to get HS outwalking around town and even going for a meal at the local Wetherspoons is just amazing. We never thought we’d ever see them do that. As a result, HS is participating much more with the family and is more willing to go out with us. We no longer have the automatic “no,” with the drawbridge pulled up and staying shut away in their room. We can finally see HS coming back, and we’re becoming a family again and that’s down to Dan, his patience, and the fact that he hasn’t pushed HS with unrealistic timeframes or expectations.

I also want to mention Leanne, both at the start and in our recent catchup. She has been very supportive and has given us reassurance along with a longer-term view. It really helps to know they’re here for us and understand this is going to take time.

We’re also really pleased with the progress HS has been making in their Functional Foundation Maths and English. For them to even be considering taking an exam outside the house is beyond anything we could have hoped for. They have enjoyed working with the tutor. It’s been great giving them an academic goal to work towards”

After just a couple of meetings, I was able to be fully on camera and communicate confidently.
