Heritage Development Trusts (HDTs) across the UK are bringing historic buildings back into community use, generating social and economic benefits for their communities. Their work ranges from supporting vulnerable individuals to reshaping perceptions of towns, attracting investment and increasing footfall.
Our role
The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) commissioned us to provide practical support to HDTs on measuring, communicating, and enhancing impact.

What we delivered
- Guidance on defining social value and using it to secure external investment
- Support in communicating impact to stakeholders, enabling stronger partnerships
- New links with universities and researchers to generate insight into local outcomes
- Tailored monitoring frameworks for HDTs to track and articulate impact on their own terms
Impact
This programme helped HDTs strengthen their impact practice, unlock investment, and embed sustainable approaches. Reviving heritage buildings is not just about preserving the past — it is a catalyst for stronger, more resilient futures.
