Inspired by our BENCHES exhibition – where repetition, detail, and variation transform ordinary objects into something remarkable – this hands-on workshop invites children to explore the same idea through nature.
In this creative session, young participants will use real tree ring cross-sections to create their own unique relief prints. Each ring tells a story: years of growth, seasons of change, moments of abundance and challenge. Just like the benches in the exhibition, no two are ever the same. By looking closely, children will uncover fascinating patterns and textures, learning how something we often overlook – like a tree trunk – can reveal incredible detail and beauty.
Guided by our friendly facilitators, children will experiment with printing techniques, explore different tree species, and create their own stunning artworks to take home. It’s a playful and engaging way to encourage curiosity, creativity, and a new way of seeing the world around us.
The BENCHES exhibition is on display in our main space throughout the whole month of April, making it the perfect opportunity for children to explore the photographs before or after their workshop and see how patterns, repetition, and attention to detail can transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
Perfect for ages 5–12, no experience is needed – just imagination!
Parents and carers are welcome to accompany children into the workshop, or take a well-earned break nearby with coffee, cake, and comfy sofas.

Thursday 16 April – 11:30am–12:30pm & 2:30pm–3:30pm
Cost: £5 per child (plus booking fee); tickets are required for children only.

Can I get a refund on an event I have booked?
You can request a refund up to 24 hours before the event. You will need to do this via the Eventbrite website.
