University of Plymouth School of Education STEAM Project

University of Plymouth BEd students explored STEAM through hands-on printmaking and 360° filmmaking workshops, creating immersive projects to inspire future primary classroom learning.

Introduction

The University of Plymouth’s School of Education partnered with Real Ideas to deliver an innovative STEAM project for BEd students during their pathway week. This initiative explored how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths can enrich primary education.

Our Role

We designed and facilitated a two-day workshop that combined traditional print-making with cutting-edge 360° digital technology. Our aim was to help future educators understand how creative, cross-disciplinary projects can enhance learning in the classroom.

What we delivered

  • Pre-Workshop Planning – Students explored how their subject specialism could fit within STEAM projects using print and film-making.
  • Hands-On Workshops:
    • Print Techniques: Practical sessions introducing creative print-making.
    • 360° Filmmaking: Training in immersive storytelling and digital production.
  • Immersive Showcase – Students’ print designs were digitally transposed into the dome, creating a stunning 360° print gallery alongside their films.
  • Impact

    The project:

    • Equipped future teachers with practical skills in print and immersive media.
    • Demonstrated how STEAM approaches can make learning meaningful and engaging.
    • Inspired students to integrate creative technologies into primary education.

    Testimonials

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our Plymouth University education students to feel the power of real-world projects in enhancing learning in the curriculum subjects, as well as the value of connecting with community arts organisations like Real Ideas. Students were hugely positive about the experience and could clearly see the ways in which projects like this one could be used with the primary-age pupils they will go on to teach. As a cornerstone of our work on making learning meaningful, we will definitely be back next year.”
