The Power of Shared Stories: The Liskeard Readers & Playreaders Groups

What started as one person’s idea to create a small reading group has grown into two thriving communities—Readers and Playreaders—thanks to the support of Real Ideas CIC and the welcoming space of Liskeard Library. Today, 22 members regularly come together to share their love of literature, enjoy cultural experiences, and tackle social isolation in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Community Day Out

Introduction

Social isolation is a growing challenge, particularly in rural areas where opportunities to connect can be limited. The Liskeard Library has become a hub for cultural engagement and grassroots initiatives. This case study explores how one individual’s passion for reading sparked a movement that now enriches lives and strengthens community ties.

Our Role

The journey began in March 2024 when a local resident approached the library with an idea for a reading group. With just a couple of contacts, she advertised at the library and on the Liskeard Community page. Library staff played a vital role in steering interested people toward the group and offering ongoing support, while Real Ideas CIC ensured the library remained a vibrant, accessible space for community-led ideas to flourish.

Using the Readers and Playreaders apps, the group quickly expanded its activities beyond books. Members organized theatre trips, shared meals, and attended cultural events. A recent highlight was a literary day out to Fowey, celebrating the works of Daphne du Maurier—a trip that strengthened friendships and deepened the group’s cultural engagement.

Impact

The impact has been remarkable. In 20 months, membership grew from one person to 22 active participants. These groups have become important routine for many, reducing isolation and creating a sense of belonging through shared experiences. Members now enjoy regular theatre visits, cultural outings, and social gatherings, all rooted in a love of literature.

As Louise, one of the founding members, explains:
“Of course, it goes without saying that none of this could have happened without all the support and care the Library and its wonderful staff have given to us.”

This case study demonstrates how Real Ideas CIC and The Liskeard Library act as catalysts for community connection. Without this foundation, these groups—and the friendships they foster—would not exist.

Future Plans

The groups plan to continue expanding activities, welcoming new members, and strengthening ties with local cultural venues—ensuring that literature remains a powerful tool for connection and wellbeing.
