Mayflower Academy 360 Film Project

Mayflower Community Academy’s Year 6 Leavers’ Project combines a 5-week 360° filmmaking programme with a celebratory Market Hall event, showcasing pupils’ creativity in an immersive dome experience.

Introduction

For the past two years, Mayflower Community Academy in Plymouth has partnered with us to deliver an inspiring Year 6 Leavers’ Project. This initiative celebrates pupils’ achievements while introducing them to innovative technology and creative storytelling.

Our Role

We designed and facilitated a 5-week in-school 360° filmmaking programme for both Year 6 classes. Our aim was to empower pupils to explore their school and local community through a fresh lens, using immersive media to capture their experiences and aspirations.

What we delivered

  • 5-Week 360° Filmmaking Project – Pupils learned the fundamentals of immersive storytelling and created their own 360° films.
  • Year 6 Leavers’ Event at Market Hall – A celebratory showcase held in the stunning Grade II listed main hall, featuring:
    • Art displays and examples of pupils’ work.
    • Presentations, music, and refreshments.
    • Premiere screenings of the students’ finished 360° films in the immersive dome.

This event provided a unique opportunity for pupils, parents, and staff to come together and celebrate creativity and achievement.

Impact

The project has:

  • Strengthened pupils’ sense of belonging and community.
  • Encouraged creative thinking and collaboration.
  • Offered families a memorable experience in a landmark venue, many for the first time. Feedback from pupils and parents highlights how the experience has been thought-provoking, positive, and full of possibility—helping students see their world from a new perspective.

Testimonials

‘Thank you for a wonderful evening. As ever the Dome and the work you produced stole the show. I love sharing the dome experience with our pupils and families, especially when so many have never visited before.’

‘Collaborating with Real Ideas on a project that gives pupils and their parents the chance to explore what it’s really like to live and learn in their school and local community has been nothing short of fantastic.

The feedback from pupils and parents has been remarkable. They tell us the experience has given them a stronger sense of belonging and helped them see their world through a fresh lens—one that is thought-provoking, positive, and full of possibility.

The ongoing support from Real Ideas Organisation has been outstanding, consistently challenging us to explore new approaches that make a lasting impact on pupils both in and beyond the classroom."
