Driving Success In Cornwall

Free driving theory lessons and funded licences are helping young people in rural Cornwall overcome transport barriers, build confidence, and access employment opportunities.

Introduction

Transport challenges in rural Cornwall often prevent young people from accessing work opportunities. Public transport is scarce, unreliable, or non-existent in many areas, creating a significant barrier to employment. To address this, YEP! introduced free driving theory lessons and funded provisional licences and theory tests—helping young people take the first step toward independence.

Our Role

We designed and delivered a programme that removes logistical barriers to employment by:

  • Offering free driving theory classes across Cornwall.
  • Funding provisional licences and theory tests for participants.
  • Using driving lessons as an engagement tool to connect young people with wider support services.

What We Delivered

  • Driving Theory Sessions: Accessible classes in locations like Penryn, tailored to young people’s needs.
  • Financial Support: Covered costs for provisional licences and theory tests.
  • Confidence Building: Used driving lessons as a gateway to re-engage socially isolated young people with education and employment pathways.

One standout success story is Paige, who passed her theory test after just three sessions. Another young person, initially withdrawn and out of education, joined the programme for driving lessons and gradually built confidence—eventually securing employment at The Range.

Impact

  • Over 40% of YEP! participants signed up for driving courses.
  • More than 50% of those have already passed their theory test.
  • Driving lessons have become a powerful engagement tool, helping socially isolated young people reconnect and move toward employment.

This initiative not only tackles transport barriers but also addresses social challenges, proving that practical support can transform lives.

“Over 1 in every 5 of our YEP! sign-ups have passed their driving theory tests.”
