Nell Carroll Turner – Liskeard Library Writer in Residence
Nell Carroll Turner is a writer and performer who lives near Liskeard. Nell plays with language and dialogue and her writing is creative, poetic, absurd and often a bit wild. She particularly enjoys writing theatre scripts and short stories. Themes include diversity, belonging and nature, always with language play at the core. She loves collecting peoples’ stories, and writing tales based on fact but which swim wildly in the style of magic realism.
As well as writing original work, Nell also translates from French and enjoys the creativity of transposing French verse and poetry to make them accessible and relevant. She is currently translating an autobiography of a French writer and poet. Nell has over 25 years’ teaching experience and holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and an MA in Literary Translation.
She is passionate about teaching, having taught creative writing and academic writing at university level. Nell’s stories and plays have been performed in various locations, including theatres, at the Edinburgh Fringe and in a Cattle Market. Her latest play was shortlisted by the Royal Shakespeare Company as part of 37 Plays, a national playwriting project to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s Folio.
Our Scribe in Residence
Suzanna Jay, The Wild Scribe is a Wordsmith; a mysterious maker of magical papery treasures. She has now become a regular feature of the Liskeard Library on Tuesday mornings, as a Scribe in Residence, and can be found at the foot of the Stairs in her own little “Scribes Corner”
If you should happen to find the Scribe in residence, she will be happy to offer you a place at her table to sit and chat, whilst she creates a little gifted personalised postcard for you, combining her own distinctive form of calligraphy handwriting with quirky miniature paper-art.
Suzanna Jay has lived at Wild Cottage in Cornwall since 2018 and has documented her creative journey on Instagram, sharing stories from her Study, Bindery-Studio and Gardens on subjects such as Journaling, Calligraphy, Mixed Media Art & Book-Binding, as well as teaching informal online groups in various corresponding journaling subjects.
She works happily from home, creating original collections of Hand-Bound Journals, Emotive Papery Makings, Calligraphy Art and Boutique Stationery which she sells online in her website shop.
As a Wordsmith, Suzanna is passionate about capturing precious moments onto a page and in establishing emotive connections through calligraphy, poetry, art and journaling. She is an enthusiastic conversationalist, an idealist, a lover of the classic novels, the romantic poets, pre-Raphaelite art, anything science fiction and is a MAJOR stationery geek.
Previously, having achieved qualifications in Interior Design and Interior Decorative Paint Techniques, Suzanna spent around fifteen years living and working on the south coast of England owning several Vintage Gift & Interiors Shops where she created copious amounts of art and craft items to sell upon the shelves.
Suzanna also taught many arts & craft based classes during this time and provided a welcoming community hub for other local makers to sell their makings and teach their craft. On occasions, both her home and businesses were featured in several national magazines including The English Home Magazine.
